Tuesday, February 28

Mrs. Parnell is doing her full-time teaching for the next two weeks!

Mrs. Johnson's class came over, and Mrs. Parnell read lots of caterpillar books. We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Life Cycle of the Monarch Butterfly." We also looked at some interesting pictures of butterflies from "The World of Nature" book about butterflies.

We worked on Math Magician today. We also worked on fractions. We practiced making the top number of fractions, as well as the bottom number. The bottom number is the total number of pieces in the whole. We made real fractions with sheets of paper. We practiced hlaves, thirds, and fourths. We also defined fraction terms in our notebooks.

Later, we completed a word problem about immigrants, which led us into our discussion about immigration. We watched a Schoolhouse Rock video called "Great American Melting Pot." It's about people coming to America looking for freedom and bringing with them their cultures, traditions, languages, etc.

Thursday, February 23

Mrs. Johnson's class came over today and we discussed more about plane and 3D shapes. We even made some 3D shapes like pyramids, cubes, cones, cylinders, and tetrahedrons. We put some new words on a vocabulary page: face and edge.

Our last group finished Math Magician today. We began a poster project. It will show that we are experts on plane shapes and 3D shapes. Our daily word problem was about caterpillars today. It tricked us severely!!! We drew pictures of what we think caterpillars look like, as well as what we think the butterfly life cycle looks like. Then, we started a life cycle of a butterfly on a paper plate. We will finish it tomorrow!

Now we're eating snack and will head to PE in a few minutes. We also have a special today . . . art! Yippee!!!!!

Wednesday, Feb. 22

This morning, Mrs. Johnson's class came over for a lesson. We discussed 3-dimensional shapes. We talked about the words face, edge, and corner. We found those attributes on some foam 3-d shapes.

During math, we practiced fluency with Math Magician, then did IXL in the computer lab. We also worked on butterly and caterpillar word problems. We did a KWL to record what we know and want to know about butterflies.

The classes made some cards for Julie Scardina. We'll finish them up in the next few days and send them to her to thank her for Skyping with us yesterday! :)

Tuesday, February 21

This has been a strange day. We started out in Mrs. Johnson's room today. We read "The Bee" today for reading. We learned that a bee's wings flap 11,400 times per minute. We also read some nonfiction books. We discussed some robust vocabulary: thickened, attack, sealed, disappear, plentiful, pattern, crowd, role.

Tomorrow in Mrs. Johnson's room, we'll work with our nonfiction folders to write about our animals.

Today is our Skype with Julie Scardina. We look forward to asking her our questions and hearing what she has to say!!!! Our Skype will be on Ustream, and we'll try to add some pix to the blog! : )

Thursday, February 16

Mrs. Rish's class visited for a sec this morning, then left quickly to go to their room. Today we studied symmetry. Symmetry means that you can split something and it'll be the same on both sides, just mirror imaged. We did a symmetry worksheet where we colored symmetrical houses. We watched Math Monsters about geometry and ate snack.

Wednesday, February 15.

Well, today is definitely more calm than yesterday. We're back on somewhat of a normal schedule.

After we got settled in, Mrs. Johnson's class came in and discussed the things that we'd do in the red hall computer lab. We also talked about Mel and Sydney and how we believe they're finished having eggs. Someone told Mrs. Bruno that the number of eggs that are laid depends upon the amount of prey available to catch. The less food to eat, the fewer eggs they'll have!

We practiced our math facts with Math Magician. Mrs. Bruno also told us that we got our iPad Monday. She's going to start using it in the classroom in a few days! :)

We headed to the computer lab to do Socrative, IXL (about congruent shapes), RazKids, and online geoboards. We practiced making similar and congruent shapes, which is a good thing because that's what our homework is Thursday night.

After the lab, we came back to eat snack and head to PE.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

We're so excited about Valentine's Day!!! We brought our Valentine stuff and are ready for our party this afternoon! Kesler's mom even sent us goody boxes to put our things in.

We went through Math Magician to practice our math facts. We learned more about shapes after reading If You Were a Polygon yesterday and If You Were a Quadrilateral today. We've also learned the terms congruent and similar today and drawn examples of each.

Our most exciting part of the day was when the Mel and Sydney site put our names on their webcam welcoming us! We thought that was really cool!!!!

Thursday, February 9

Wow, what a crazy few days we've had! Tuesday was our trip to Children's Theatre. The kids learned that Sacagawea was an Indian guide to Lewis and Clarke. They loved the show.

Yesterday, we introduced our geometry unit and took a "Shape Walk." We found every-day examples circles, squares, and rectangle.

Today is Kesler's birthday. We decided that if he wasn't good, all 20 of us got to give him 8 birthday spankings!!! : )

We went further in geometry today, learning about lines, line segments, vertices, and angles. We decided that, in flat shapes, the number of sides the object has is also the number of vertices and angles. We drew some shapes and determined their sides, vertices, and angles. We also learned about sliding, turning, and flipping those shapes!!!

Friday, February 3

Mrs. Johsson's class came over this morning. Mrs. Glover came down to see us, and we gave her the gift cards and money we'd collected for her. She was very happy, excited, and grateful. Our overall total collected ended up being more than $700!!! Yea!!!

We have a new face in our room! She's our student teacher, and her name is Mrs. Parnell. She is nice, and we're glad to have her!

Kamden is good citizen this week. Her friends say that she was a good friend this week, she improved, and she was quiet in the hall!

This morning, we reviewed all of the vertebrate groups we'd learned about so far. We also talked about our final group, fish. Fish are cold-blooded, live in water, and breathe with gills. We read "What is a Fish?" and "Fabulous Fishes."

In math, we did centers, like always on Fridays. We worked on double-digit addition/subtraction, Coin Bingo, and animal observations. We discussed the animal observations, then drew diagrams of the guppies and snails we observed. We'll make aquatic ecosystems next week!
