This morning, Mrs. Bruno had a project for us.  She needed us to count out some coffee stirrers.  We decided that counting by 1s was way too much, so we counted by 10s.  After we bundled groups of 10s, we put them in bigger groups of 100s.  We think that we're going to put them in groups of thousands.  We sure are glad we were around to help Mrs. Bruno.  Otherwise, she'd still be in the floor counting by 1s.  She just doesn't know the most efficient way to count things!  Bless her heart!

We did centers in Mrs. Johnson's room.  One of our centers was visiting with Mrs. Johnson.  Another center was silent reading.  We also did writing workshop.  Our other center was whiteboards with partners.  We wrote things for homework.

We had Picture Day.

9-14-15

Good morning!  Mondays are such hectic days that I told the kids I'd blog today, rather than rushing them to do it.

We started our morning with spelling words, like every Monday.  We're excited that there are only 10 this week.

We learned lots about solids and liquids this morning.  Our vocabulary words included property (how you describe something using your senses), flexible (able to bend), rigid (stiff, unable to bend), smooth (can rub hand across easily), rough (bumpy; not smooth), transparent (lets light pass through), and opaque (doesn't let light pass through).

Hi, parents!  I was in a meeting all day, so the kids weren't able to blog today.  Hopefully, we'll be back on track tomorrow!!!  Have a great afternoon!

The blog  is being turned over to the students today, so you'll now see one child type the blog each day in the same way that Mrs. Bruno has.  It always takes several rotations to really get in the swing of things, so hang in there with us.  Each child is given the opportunity to blog, but they are welcome to pass if they're uncomfortable with it.

Skills Agenda

9-4-15

Congratulations to Jake M. for being this week's Good Citizen.

We took a spelling test in Mrs. Johnson's room this morning.  We also went to the red hall computer lab to take our STAR tests.  Writing workshop was also a part of our morning.  We finished our "I Like to Be Little" writing.

In Mrs. Bruno's class, we measured with rulers and paper clips.  We measured lockers and workbooks.  At the end of class, we practiced using a compass rose to locate different states on our US map.

9-3-15

We started the day by making meter sticks out of paper.  We did a really good job!

In language, we finished our "I Like to be Little" writing.  We completed a sheet where we corrected mistakes in sentences.  We also had some silent reading time.

In math, we measured lines with rulers and figured the differences in their lengths.  We used a meter stick to count by 10s for centimeters and meters.  We did a Sprint on measurement, and Mrs. Bruno hopes that we improved between Sprint A and Sprint B.  Our exit ticket was about measurement, too.  At the end of the block, we sang the Continent Song and located the continents on the map.  We also reviewed the map key and discussed the compass rose.

9-2-15

First thing this morning, we turned our language notebooks "hamburger" style and categorized our spelling words and some bonus words into short vowel columns.  We re-read Jamaica Louise James once before and took a reading test.  We also watched an e-book called Ways to Find Your Way.  We also did a Studies Weekly about maps.

In math, we practiced measure more things.  We also decided which ways were more efficient to measure certain things, based on their size.  We said that it'd be easier to measure pencils in centimeters, but school buses in meters.

9-1-15

In Mrs. Johnson's room, we had reading centers.  One thing we did was to work on our "All About Me" people.  Another center was word work with short e, o, and u.  A third center was a reading workshop. Lastly, our fourth center was meeting with Mrs. Johnson.  We also worked on a study guide for Jamaica Louise James.

Our math lesson today was actually TWO lessons combined.  We took what we learned yesterday (using linking centimeter) and measured more things today.  This time we only used ONE cube for the beginning of our lesson, and then got to use a special tool for the end of our lesson.
