11-20-15

Happy Friday!  We're sorry we haven't blogged in a while, but it's been crazy with Mrs. Bruno being out of town and rehearsing for our Colonial play.  We probably won't blog again until November 30, after we're back from the Thanksgiving break.

Today, we started the morning going to the amphitheater and rehearsing our play.

In math, we did a fun turkey sheet with addition problems on it.  After answering two-digit regrouping problems, we colored the odd sums brown and the even sums orange.  Then, we went to the computer lab.  As always, the computers gave us trouble while Mrs. Johnson's class was in there.  They ALWAYS do that to us in the morning.

In language, we played Sparkle and had a spelling test.  We had a sheet where we combined words with syllables.  We also searched for Thanksgiving words on a sheet.  We read a Thanksgiving story and answered questions about it.

We hope everyone has a very Happy Thanksgiving!

We took a vacation from morning work this morning to talk about science.  We talked about different vehicles for different missions and how the space program moved from rockets to space shuttles.  One of the major jobs of the space shuttle was to carry pieces of the International Space Station into space and put it together.

We visited with Mrs. Johnson and did centers in her room.  We put our spelling words and sight words in ABC order.  One of our centers was word work.  Another center was finishing our scarecrow writing in workshop.  Our other center was phonics. Happy Friday, everyone!!!!  Congratulations to Owen, who is our good citizen.

In language, we played Sparkle, then had our spelling test.  We checked our scarecrow writing as a group.  If we'd finished our scarecrow writing when Mrs. Johnson was absent yesterday, we were able to go to the library.

In math today, we took our Unit 3 test.  It was a breeze.  Mrs. Bruno told us we'd have a fun 100s chart mystery on the test, but it wasn't there.  So, she gave us one as a bonus question.  Easy-peezy, lemon squeezy!!!  : )  She also showed us pictures comparing our planet to the other inner planets, the outer planets, the sun, and other stars.  BOY, do we feel small now!!!!!!

Have a happy weekend!

This morning, Mrs. Bruno had a project for us.  She needed us to count out some coffee stirrers.  We decided that counting by 1s was way too much, so we counted by 10s.  After we bundled groups of 10s, we put them in bigger groups of 100s.  We think that we're going to put them in groups of thousands.  We sure are glad we were around to help Mrs. Bruno.  Otherwise, she'd still be in the floor counting by 1s.  She just doesn't know the most efficient way to count things!  Bless her heart!

We did centers in Mrs. Johnson's room.  One of our centers was visiting with Mrs. Johnson.  Another center was silent reading.  We also did writing workshop.  Our other center was whiteboards with partners.  We wrote things for homework.

We had Picture Day.

Monday, September 14, 2015

9-14-15

Good morning!  Mondays are such hectic days that I told the kids I'd blog today, rather than rushing them to do it.

We started our morning with spelling words, like every Monday.  We're excited that there are only 10 this week.

We learned lots about solids and liquids this morning.  Our vocabulary words included property (how you describe something using your senses), flexible (able to bend), rigid (stiff, unable to bend), smooth (can rub hand across easily), rough (bumpy; not smooth), transparent (lets light pass through), and opaque (doesn't let light pass through).

The blog  is being turned over to the students today, so you'll now see one child type the blog each day in the same way that Mrs. Bruno has.  It always takes several rotations to really get in the swing of things, so hang in there with us.  Each child is given the opportunity to blog, but they are welcome to pass if they're uncomfortable with it.

Skills Agenda

9-4-15

Congratulations to Jake M. for being this week's Good Citizen.

We took a spelling test in Mrs. Johnson's room this morning.  We also went to the red hall computer lab to take our STAR tests.  Writing workshop was also a part of our morning.  We finished our "I Like to Be Little" writing.

In Mrs. Bruno's class, we measured with rulers and paper clips.  We measured lockers and workbooks.  At the end of class, we practiced using a compass rose to locate different states on our US map.

Thursday, September 3, 2015

9-3-15

We started the day by making meter sticks out of paper.  We did a really good job!

In language, we finished our "I Like to be Little" writing.  We completed a sheet where we corrected mistakes in sentences.  We also had some silent reading time.

In math, we measured lines with rulers and figured the differences in their lengths.  We used a meter stick to count by 10s for centimeters and meters.  We did a Sprint on measurement, and Mrs. Bruno hopes that we improved between Sprint A and Sprint B.  Our exit ticket was about measurement, too.  At the end of the block, we sang the Continent Song and located the continents on the map.  We also reviewed the map key and discussed the compass rose.

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

9-2-15

First thing this morning, we turned our language notebooks "hamburger" style and categorized our spelling words and some bonus words into short vowel columns.  We re-read Jamaica Louise James once before and took a reading test.  We also watched an e-book called Ways to Find Your Way.  We also did a Studies Weekly about maps.

In math, we practiced measure more things.  We also decided which ways were more efficient to measure certain things, based on their size.  We said that it'd be easier to measure pencils in centimeters, but school buses in meters.

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

9-1-15

In Mrs. Johnson's room, we had reading centers.  One thing we did was to work on our "All About Me" people.  Another center was word work with short e, o, and u.  A third center was a reading workshop. Lastly, our fourth center was meeting with Mrs. Johnson.  We also worked on a study guide for Jamaica Louise James.

Our math lesson today was actually TWO lessons combined.  We took what we learned yesterday (using linking centimeter) and measured more things today.  This time we only used ONE cube for the beginning of our lesson, and then got to use a special tool for the end of our lesson.

Skills Agenda for Aug. 31

8-28-15

Congrats to Rhiley, our Good Citizen for the week!

We had writing workshop today after our spelling test.  We finished our pictures about liking to be little.  We also read our Studies Weekly.

In math, we had our very first math test!  It was long, but we're hoping we did well.  We also discussed maps and globes and learned a fun song about continents!

Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. Johnson would like to remind everyone that snacks should consist of WATER and a HEALTHY snack.  Thanks for your help with this!  :)

Thursday, August 27, 2015

8-27-15

In Mrs. Johnson's class, it was our first time to do centers with groups. One center was working on sight words using the iPads.  Another center was silent reading on the carpet.  We also looked for the short "a" and short "i" sound in small books.  Our fourth center was meeting with Mrs. Johnson to do fluency.  After centers, we did dictation on whiteboards.  To end our class period, we illustrated our I Like to Be Little writing.

In math, we continued taking out 10 to subtract. We did our last lesson before tomorrow's test.  Our homework tonight will review this module's 8 lessons for the test.

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

8-26-15

First in Mrs. Johnson's room today, we took a reading comprehension sheet about being responsible.  Our class listened to Mrs. Johnson read I Like to Be Little, then we wrote about it during writing workshop.  We watched a Brainpop video about characters.  We hope that it will improve our writing even MORE!

We learned another strategy for subtracting in math today.  We're still taking out 10, but we did it in smaller numbers today.  Yea!!!!

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

8-25-15

We didn't have the opportunity to blog yesterday.  Our Mondays are a little crazy since they're shorter than other days.  Monday blogging will be sporadic.

We're having a great day so far!  We read a Studies Weekly called Rights and Responsibilities in Mrs. Johnson's room.  Our writing workshop today was a free write, and we also had a reading workshop that focused on great beginnings.  We watched a Brainpop about punctuation.

Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Bruno like to integrate all of their subjects, so guess what we talked about in our first social studies lesson?  You guessed it, rights and responsibilities.  We watched a Brainpop and learned about communities and citizenship.  We took a vacation from Eureka today to do Global Scholar in the computer lab.

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

The first thing we did in Mrs. Johnson' class was to take our first-ever second grade spelling test.  We also heard about Lauren, Grace, and Preston's All About Me pictures today.  Something else that was really hard today was making paper people.  We will glue our All About Me items on these "people."  We had LOTS of fun!

In math, we worked more on making the NEXT ten.  Today's lesson was SUPER successful!  We're starting to feel better about Eureka!

Congratulations to Parker for being our first Good Citizen!  Yippeeeeeeeeeeee!  Have a great weekend!

Thursday, August 20, 2015

8-20-15

In Mrs. Johnson's class, we had some free writing time.  We also had some silent reading time.  The dry erase boards came out to practice nonsense words.  Nonsense words are not real words, but they help us learn phonics.  We also started our first Studies Weekly.

In math, today, we worked on making tens and making the next ten.  We used the make ten strategy to solve math fact problems like 9 + 8 being rewritten as 10 + 7.  We'll have our first test next Friday!

Wednesday, August 19, 2015

8-19-15

We had our first math morning work assignment today.  In language, we wrote about our summer vacations and will put them together in a book.  We also read silently to ourselves.

In math, we worked on branching numbers to make number sentences easier.  We have our first science comprehension sheet tonight.

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

8-18-15

In Mrs. Johnson's class this morning, we wrote a story about our best friend.  We started reading levelized books.  That means that  they're "JUST RIGHT" books for you!!  Before we left, we had a chance to read part of our books.  We'll finish these books for homework.   In math, we worked more on Eureka.

We had TWO parents comment on our blog last night!  YIPPEE!!!  That means TWO people will get stamps on their Caught Being Good Tickets!!! WHOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Monday, August 17, 2015

8-17-15

Happy Monday!!!!!  The first thing we did this morning was copy our first spelling list.  Mrs. Johnson read us My Best Friend.  Then, we read silently after that.  We decorated our writing folders, then switched classes.  Mrs. Bruno started a brand new math program with us.  (She told us she was very nervous about it, so we're going to be patient with her!!!!)  We did target practice, two sprints, happy counting, "say ten," and an exit ticket.  WHEW . . . there was a lot!!!!

Today will be our first early Monday dismissal.  We're sad that it's rainy and yucky today!!  Hoping for sun later this week!!!

Friday, August 14, 2015

SKILLS AGENDA FOR 8/17

8-14-15

It's the third day of school, and we swapped classes for the very first time today.  It's the best day ever (again).  We read a book in Mrs. Johnson's class called I Need My Monster.  We drew a picture of our own monster and then wrote a story about it.  We'll put all of them in a book to enjoy.

In math today, we talked about what math means to US!  Mrs. Bruno will put all of our ideas on a poster for us to refer to all year.  Then, we completed a page about how numbers make up our own lives.

We're excited that it's Friday.  Hope it's a great weekend!

Thursday, August 13, 2015

8-13-15

Happy SECOND day of SECOND grade!  We have laughed all day.  We talked about fire drills and tornado drills. Mrs. Bruno didn't talk about this to scare us, but to prepare us!  We went outside to practice our fire drill.  While we were out there, we took class pictures. This is our favorite day so far!  Can't wait for tomorrow!

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!

Today is our first day of second grade!  Our teacher is some super-crazy lady, and we're not really sure how anyone could let her loose!!!  :)

We've spent all day learning how to do second grade things.  We've learned rules and procedures, and we're looking forward to a great year!!!!  Whoo hooooooooooooooooo!

Skills Agenda for April 27th

4-24-15

What a crazy few weeks we've had.  We have been so busy that we haven't had much time to blog.  Our normal blogging time has been replaced with cursive handwriting time, so blogging hasn't been a priority.

We've been learning lots, though.  We've done non-standard and standard measurement activities, measured huge animals by counting tiles in the hall, playing "I Have . . . Who Has?" and lots of other great things.

Boosterthon and our Oak Mountain field trip have also fallen in the last couple of weeks!  Sadly, I don't believe things will slow down much as the end of school inches closer!
