We're Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
Yes, this horrible teacher hasn't blogged in a MONTH!!!!! With my play on the other side, followed by spring break, which backed up to my science conference in Indianapolis, we've been way too busy and had way too many subs to be able to blog. I'm hoping we're back to normal now!!! :)
Congratulations to Ethan, this week's good citizen. We can always count on Ethan to be doing the right things at the right times. I love not having to correct him, and his friends love being able to count on him at all times. Way to go, Ethan!!!!
We're right in the middle of Boosterthon, and, boy, is it fun! Action Jackson came and spent the afternoon with us Wednesday. He read some of Oggie Cooder to us. He wanted to do the Burger Dance, too, but the bell rang too quickly. We're enjoying raising money for our school, and we can't WAIT for the Fun Run. We love jogging around that track to all of the fun music!!! Boosterthon Fun Run, here we come!!!!!!
In science, we tried raising caterpillars into butterflies. Sadly, our first group of caterpillars didn't make it. They ate the tissue paper in their cups, rather than their food, and most of them didn't live. We're on round two, and these seem to be doing a little better. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
We've been studying measurement in math, and it's been tons of fun. Wednesday we measured the fence around the playground to see what the perimeter measured. We also measured the black barricade that holds the bark. We used yardsticks to measure.
In social studies, we've been discussion needs vs. wants. We learned that we don't NEED that new Justice shirt or the expensive dirt bike . . . we just WANT them. We've learned that the only things we truly need are water, shelter, food, and clothes. Today, we talked about how adults have to have an INCOME to be able to pay for needs and wants. We also discussed the difference between producers and consumers. We learned that the PRODUCERS are the people who make or grow things to sell, while the CONSUMERS are the ones who buy those goods or services.
Today, we also were able to get back on our Friday centers schedule. We used the iPad, the computer, flashcards, and worked with Mrs. Bruno.
We're still loving viewing all of our favorite animals via webcam. We have sad news to report, though. Molly (of Molly and Magee) lost Magee and all four of her babies. We've learned that she has a new suitor, though, so maybe all is not lost for her. Sadly, two of Mel and Sydney's owlets also passed away. It's been a sad year for owl survival!!! Phoebe's eggs have hatched and are growing like little weeds!!! They're adorable. We're also enjoying watching the bald eagles from Decorah, Iowa. There are three eaglets, but we're worried that one might not make it. It's still chilly there, and the runt is not getting alot of the food due to its bully brothers or sisters!!!
Well, we hope that catches you up on the happenings in our room over the last few weeks! We've missed blogging, but we hope we're back with a vengence. The students are even going to go back to producing the blog, rather than Mrs. Bruno! Yea!!!! : )

Mrs. Parnell is doing her full-time teaching for the next two weeks!
Mrs. Johnson's class came over, and Mrs. Parnell read lots of caterpillar books. We read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Life Cycle of the Monarch Butterfly." We also looked at some interesting pictures of butterflies from "The World of Nature" book about butterflies.
We worked on Math Magician today. We also worked on fractions. We practiced making the top number of fractions, as well as the bottom number. The bottom number is the total number of pieces in the whole. We made real fractions with sheets of paper. We practiced hlaves, thirds, and fourths. We also defined fraction terms in our notebooks.
Later, we completed a word problem about immigrants, which led us into our discussion about immigration. We watched a Schoolhouse Rock video called "Great American Melting Pot." It's about people coming to America looking for freedom and bringing with them their cultures, traditions, languages, etc.

Mrs. Johnson's class came over today and we discussed more about plane and 3D shapes. We even made some 3D shapes like pyramids, cubes, cones, cylinders, and tetrahedrons. We put some new words on a vocabulary page: face and edge.
Our last group finished Math Magician today. We began a poster project. It will show that we are experts on plane shapes and 3D shapes. Our daily word problem was about caterpillars today. It tricked us severely!!! We drew pictures of what we think caterpillars look like, as well as what we think the butterfly life cycle looks like. Then, we started a life cycle of a butterfly on a paper plate. We will finish it tomorrow!
Now we're eating snack and will head to PE in a few minutes. We also have a special today . . . art! Yippee!!!!!
